The Field Map: Myla's own map of her hometown, drawn the way a real cartographer builds one. Gathered piece by piece, place by place. Every landmark on it is hiding something.

Five Clue Cards: One question for each checkpoint in the book. Open one early and it's just a riddle with no answer. The book knows things the card doesn't.

The Password: Five boxes. Fill every one, unscramble what you've got, and you'll have the password that cracks the case.
Gather all five letters, unscramble them, and you'll have a password. It opens one door: your own Cadet Club certificate!

The Field Kit is free and always will be. We ask for an email so we can send you the file and let you know about events, news, and upcoming book release information related to your young reader! Nothing else, and we never sell your address to anyone.

Here's what makes it different from most book activities: No clue can be answered without reading the chapter it's tied to. There's no guessing around it and no answer key floating online. The activity will stretch through the entirety of the book, not just one chapter or one afternoon.

It's paper and a pencil the whole way through. The only screen involved is about ninety seconds at the very end, when a grown-up scans a code to check the password.

Q: Why do I have to give my email?

Q: Does the kit spoil the book?
A: No. Every clue is locked to a chapter you've already finished, and none of them give away the ending.
Q: Our printer is black and white. Is that a problem?
A: Not at all. Everything the puzzle needs is readable in grayscale!
Q: We lost a page. Can we reprint it?
A: Yes. The download link in your email stays live, so print whatever went missing under the couch.
Q: Can a classroom or library use this?
A: Please do!! Print as many copies as you need for your readers. Just don't sell it.
Q: My kid is stuck.
A: Reply to the kit email and J.C. will send a nudge, never an answer.
Q: Do I have to print the certificate from my phone?
A: Nope! The QR code takes you to a mobile and desktop-friendly webpage. You can download your Cadet Club certificate and print it from whichever device works best for you.
